Just outside Grande Cache, the Sulphur River carves through a canyon only accessible by raft. This half-day trip blends fun Class II/III rapids, dramatic cliffs, and calm floating sections. You’ll team paddle through the rapids, float under the cliffs at the Sulphur Gates, and take in views few ever get to see.

The first half of the trip is fast and fun on moderate whitewater that varies with the season. Then the wide, calm Smoky River is perfect for water fights, swimming, or just soaking in the mountain views.

All equipment and transport from our base to the river is included.

It’s a trip filled with laughter, connection, and memories you’ll carry long after you leave the river.

Check-in at our Base: We’ll welcome you, check you in, and get you geared up with a wetsuit, helmet, jacket, and PFD.

Short Shuttle to the Canyon: A 4 km drive to a forested ridge overlooking the Sulphur River Canyon.

Walk to the River: 150 metres on a steep switchback trail. Those with walking impairments or vertigo may find it difficult, but assistance is available.

Prep for Rafting: At the river’s edge, we double-check gear and give a detailed safety briefing.

Raft the River: Paddle through 8 km of class II/III rapids in a narrow, winding canyon. Hard paddling for a few minutes needed at times. Everyone over the age of 12 usually paddles, but allowances can be made for disabilities or fear. Water conditions can raise the age of paddlers.

Float on the Smoky River: At Sulphur Gates, the canyon opens up and the river widens. This 6 km stretch is perfect for relaxing and optional water fights or swimming.

Shuttle Back to Base: After landing at the bridge just north of Grande Cache, we drive back 6 km to our base to change back into warm clothes.

Check in at your trip start time

  1. Do I have to make a reservation?
Generally, yes. But if there's space on a trip that's already going out, you can book at the last minute.
  2. How far in advance should I book? The sooner, the better. Saturdays often sell out, but whatever is available online is available to book. Groups of more than 8 wanting a Saturday trip should book at least 2 weeks in advance.
  3. I don’t see the date I want!
Contact us. We might be able to fit you in.
  4. How old do you have to be?
The minimum age is 8+. At higher water, that can change.
  5. Do I have to know how to swim?
No. Everyone wears a lifejacket (PFD), and the Safety Talk covers what to do if you fall out of the raft.
  6. What if it rains or gets cold?
Rafting is a great activity in the rain - we're trying to get wet! Plus, we have excellent gear that will keep you warm even on the coldest of days.
